A great manual to start learning refereeing. Entertaining to read, well-written, and easily organized with very nice graphics, this book guides the reader through the mental and social steps to become an effective official. The communication tips and people management ideas in here probably can also be applied to some life problems, with lessons to on how to relate to, and interact with, those around us on a daily basis - for professional, casual, or even family social settings.

As a youth recreational sports coach over the years I’ve seen many refs across a wide range of ages. I was the hothead coach at times - sometimes emotion gets the better of me. And the difference between a socially adept ref and a socially inept ref made the difference in keeping things fun and still competitive or degrading into miserable feelings later on. The Social Ref reminded me of myself both bad and good and all the great refs I’ve had the pleasure of officiating our games. The vivid examples of what leads to a bad ref experience really helped me to see some of the mistakes I made. And it made me smile when I read examples of a well managed game. Great book. Nicely printed. I liked the graphics and the layout it was easy to pick up and read a bit at a time
